Authentikk project emphasizes to the renovation and preservation of cultural assets. One of
the intervened cultural sites will be the so called ‘mountain theatre’. The Mountain Theatre in
Kastoria is located on the hill of Agios Athanasios, on the eastern side of the city. It is an
open, amphitheatrical space, built on the model of an ancient theatrical stage. Due to its
location, the view of the city and the lake of Kastoria, creates a wonderful atmosphere during
the performances and beyond. The view is spectacular and the visitor could enjoy the musical
or theatrical performances in a breath-taking location. During the summer months, mainly,
various performances and events of the Municipality of Kastoria and other artistic groups are
hosted here.
According to the plan drawn throughout the project, extensive maintenance work will take
place as well as drainage works so that there is no subsidence and backfilling in the theatre
area. In addition, the extension of the stage has been planned so that it can accommodate
larger theatrical productions in order the size of the stage is not considered a barrier to the
organization of events or theatrical performances.
The Mountain Theatre plays a leading role in hosting cultural and musical events during the
summer. Dozens of theatrical performances and musical events are taken place each year
being the most famous organized location outside to host such events. Therefore, it is an
important cultural site that needs maintenance and renewal in order to continue to serve the
local but also the visitors as the main event spot in the town of Kastoria especially during
summertime!
