Local gastronomy and products
Local gastronomy is another of the main reasons why you should visit the city of Kastoria.
Local dishes, in the oven, in the pot, in the casserole or as a soup, include sarmades with sauerkraut, “armias” as the locals call them, armiopita (pie with sauerkraut), meatballs with makalo (sauce with flour, tomato and garlic).
Fish could not be absent from the gastronomic map, with the fish having its place of honour, either as a soup ‘garoufa’, the head of the fish with part of the neck and its caviar ,or in the oven (‘gribadi tavas’). Try also the delicious lemon perch in the oven with potatoes.
On the table you will find the region’s famous beans – giant and elephant beans – cheese, kefalotyri, kefalograviera made from sheep’s milk and goat’s milk and bajo cheese, while the region’s famous wild mushrooms have become a feature of Castorian cuisine. It goes without saying that all dishes must be accompanied with local tsipouro and wine, to complete your gastronomic experience.
Among the local products, with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), apart from beans and apples, which are distinguished by their shiny colour and fragrant aroma, you will find Kastorian slaliros, traditional pasta, liqueurs, jams, spoon sweets, etc. In Doltso and in the shop of traditional products “Roots” (Tel.: 2467100357) we picked out spoon sweets from giant beans and the famous apples of the region.
